The White House was preparing on Wednesday to deploy scores of law enforcement personnel to the Bay Area region for a major crackdown on immigration, triggering outrage from local politicians.

Details of the deployment were gradually becoming clear, but it will reportedly involve approximately 100+ federal agents, as reported. The officers are expected to begin utilizing the military installation in across the bay, facing San Francisco. It remained unclear whether state soldiers would join the operation.

Official Response

The mission is the result of weeks of threats by Donald Trump to target the Democratic-run city. The state's leader Gavin Newsom criticized the action, labeling it “straight from the authoritarian playbook”.

“He dispatches covered agents, he deploys customs officers, he sends out federal agents, he creates worry and terror in the community so that he can lay claim for handling that by sending in the national guard,” the governor stated. “This is no different than the firestarter fighting the blaze.”

Local Readiness

San Francisco is the newest metropolitan center singled out by Donald Trump’s campaign of widespread apprehensions. The operation is expected to trigger a showdown between the White House and local leaders who have pledged to block armed border control in the city.

San Franciscans have been gearing up for months for Trump to make good on frequent statements to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s mayor emphasized that the city was prepared.

“During this period, we have been expecting the possibility of some kind of government operation in our city,” declared the leader, adding that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and ensure our offices are prepared ahead of any national intervention.”

Constitutional Framework

Regardless of legal challenges to operations in a several municipalities, including Illinois, the Pacific Northwest and Southern California, Trump has asserted “absolute authority” to deploy the national guard in cities, referencing the Insurrection Act which permits presidents certain rights to deploy troops on US soil.

Local Reaction

The governor, who once held office as San Francisco’s mayor – had committed to intervene “right away” to a mission in the city. “The idea that the federal government can deploy troops into our cities with no legitimate cause based on facts, no supervision, no accountability, no respect for state sovereignty – it’s a direct assault on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Community groups, including civil rights groups created during the first Trump administration, have organized to rapidly assemble a public demonstration in the city, as well as candlelight gatherings at community centers.

Community Effect

In San Francisco’s Mission district, a largely Hispanic population, city supervisor stated to media last week she and her residents had been bracing for this moment. “The point that workers cease employment, when anyone Black or brown are afraid to go outdoors without the apprehension of national personnel targeting based on race and detaining them, the moment when parents stop sending kids to school, are too scared to go to the food market or doctor,” she said. “The readiness efforts in the Mission is essentially a halt the extent of which we haven’t seen since the pandemic.”

Military Status

Roughly 300 out of several thousand California national guard troops stay under federal control under an command from Trump. About several hundred of them had been transferred to the neighboring state, where they were remaining in uncertainty amid a judicial dispute over their deployment.
