Celebrated Actress Dame Patricia Routledge, Legendary for Hyacinth Bucket, Dies at 96 Years Old
Actress Dame Patricia Routledge, best known for embodying the character Hyacinth Bucket in the classic TV sitcom the series Keeping Up Appearances, has left us at the age of 96, according to.
She also featured in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and portrayed the BBC's amateur detective Hetty Wainthropp.
"We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Patricia Routledge, who passed away peacefully in her sleep this morning with loved ones near."
"Despite her advanced years, Dame Patricia's passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences remained strong, just as modern audiences keep discovering her work through her popular screen performances."
The statement continued: "She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her loyal fans worldwide."
An Illustrious Career
Dame Patricia was primarily recognized as the character Hyacinth Bucket - who insisted it be said "bouquet" - a funny persona who embodied the peak of British social climbing.
"Hyacinth is a terrible snob and I enjoyed playing her immensely," the performer commented.
Keeping Up Appearances ran from 1990 until 1995, and a year later she was chosen as the most beloved female performer at the television awards.
Additionally, she received recognition both live and recorded after beginning her professional life in the theatre in the 1950s.
After appearances in London's West End, she made a name in the United States when she was awarded the Tony Award for leading musical performer on Broadway for Darling of the Day in 1968.
She was as adept at dramatic roles as she was at musicals and comedy - she performed in Shakespeare's histories at the RSC, then received an Laurence Olivier Award for outstanding musical performance for Candide in the eighties.
The 80s also saw her become a television icon - being given roles by Victoria Wood in As Seen on TV, and writer Alan Bennett in his acclaimed monologue series, including the 1988 piece A Lady of Letters, for which she earned a Bafta award nomination.
She received additional Bafta nods, for the popular sitcom, in 1992 and 1993, then starred in the title role as a retired woman on a mission to investigate mysteries in BBC One's Hetty Wainthropp Investigates between the late 1990s.
She received an Order of the British Empire in 1993, a CBE in the 2000s, and damehood in 2017.
